Kookaburra Ball Experiment Ends – Dukes Return for Full 2026 County Championship
The ECB has confirmed that the Kookaburra ball experiment in the County Championship has come to an end. After three seasons of mixed results, all 14 rounds of the 2026 campaign will once again be played with the traditional Dukes ball – a move welcomed by players and fans alike.
The Kookaburra, machine-made and widely used in Australia and New Zealand, was introduced to help English bowlers adapt to overseas conditions. However, many felt it tipped the balance too far towards batters. This summer’s rounds saw soaring first-innings scores and fewer wickets, with Surrey’s massive 820-9 declared against Durham summing up the frustration.
County directors unanimously called for a return to Dukes, and the ECB’s Professional Game Committee has agreed. The hand-stitched Dukes ball, known for its pronounced seam and consistent swing, traditionally gives bowlers more assistance and creates a truer contest between bat and ball – something most agree is at the heart of English cricket.
At Martin Berrill Sports, we stock both Dukes and Kookaburra cricket balls, giving players the chance to experience the difference first-hand. Whether you’re preparing for seamer-friendly English conditions or honing your skills for flatter overseas pitches, we’ve got the perfect ball for your game.
