FA Ball Size Changes for 2026/2027 Season

Has the ball size changed for different age groups?

Yes, for the 2026/2027 Season onwards the FA have introduced some changes in the ball sizes to be used in different formats and different age groups.

The use of size 3 balls across primary school groups has increased, up to and including Year 6, which aligns with 7v7 being extended to this age group. It is hoped this will make it easier for schools.

A size 4 ball will be used at Year 7 and Year 8, where 9v9 is the maximum format. A size 5 ball will be introduced for 11v11 at Year 9.

Summary Table

FA Ball Sizes Changes from 2026/2027 Season

Summary by Ball Sizes and Age/Format:
  • Size 3: Used for Under 7 to Under 11 (3v3, 5v5, & 7v7 formats).
  • Size 4: Used for Under 12 to Under 13 (9v9 format).
  • Size 5: Used for Under 14 to Open Age (11v11 format)

Key Changes Summary:

  • U7 Entry Level: Moves to 3v3 format, using a Size 3 ball.
  • 11v11 Timing: 11-a-side football now begins at U14 rather than U13.
  • Consistency: The new, simplified structure ensures that as long as the match format remains the same, the ball size stays the same.

These changes are designed to provide more touches on the ball and better alignment with schools. Workshops and support materials are being delivered throughout 2025/26 to prepare leagues and clubs.
